For most of us who are not perfectionists, we do our own planning, amending our plans often as we move on.

I have learned that plans do change when we constantly adjust to things that happen in our lives. when we get married and start a family, changing jobs, starting a business, supporting the elderly, etc. all these will cause our plans to change. Having a plan means being better prepared to face all these changes. The important thing is not to be afraid to modify your financial plans to suit your current situation. The future is “unknown” but being prepared means no or less regret later on if things do not turn out as well as expected.

Building wealth/Investing money

Personally I admit that this part of money management is the hardest for me. I am not a good risk taker preferring to park my money in safe, slow and steady types of investment like the Amanah Saham and the Unit Trust funds. On the other hand, I also tend to fall for high return schemes falling prey to my own greed. It is easy to accept advice about not putting all our eggs into one basket but it takes some guts to implement it. We are supposed to spread our money across various types of investments like stocks, properties, precious metals, bonds, etc. I am not averse to diversifying my investments but I prefer to do it gradually.

Budget planning

I have been keeping a monthly budget ever since I started to work. I am not particularly fussy about doing it and generally it shows where my money is going. It saves the trouble of having sleepless nights wondering where my money had disappeared to. when I run out of money to spend (no more budget), I prefer to stay home to avoid the temptation of spending money outside.

One thing that has worked for my family is being careful and taking care of our personal things or belongings. this ensures a long life usage avoiding wastage and unnecessary expenditure of buying new replacements. My children can use their school bags for two years without replacement and wear one pair of school shoes for an entire school year (well almost). My spouse does not mind doing preventive maintenance and repair work around the house to ensure things are taken care off and avoiding a bigger problem or costly repairs. It helps the budget and hence I can allocate more money for long term goals instead.

Paying off debts

It is hard to live without debts and most of us will have medium to long-term debts like a house loan or car loan. My spouse and I do not take debts lightly and pay off all credit card debts at the end of every month, so there is no outstanding balance. Before taking up a new debt (e.g. loan from the bank), it is important to ensure that we have the resources to pay off the debt. It is necessary to allocate a certain manageable percentage of your income for debt reduction or settlement. never let your debts snowball without having the resources to settle them.

It should be obvious to you by now that there are many aspects to money management. The above are just some part of it. which part or aspect seems daunting or difficult to you?

In simple words, what is your biggest financial problem?

The end of the year is a natural time for reflection, to look back at the past 12 months and assess our performance and progress in every aspect of life. I spend a great deal of time trying to figure out what financial strategies were most effective in helping our clients move toward their financial goals.

Guess what? I come up with many of the same answers every December! and that’s a good thing. it shows that a commitment to the fundamentals of personal investing will serve you well, regardless of the economic weather. Here are four of those perennial truths:

1. You Gotta believe. Because retirement seems so far away and/or unattainable, some people write it off as an impossible dream or simply choose to ignore it. They don’t plan for it. They don’t save for it. They don’t invest for it. Big mistake. as Henry Ford said, “Whether you believe you can, or you can’t – you’re right.”

Retirement is possible! in my work as a financial advisor I congratulate a steady stream of people in their 60’s and 70’s who have stopped working (by choice) and are off to start living life on their own terms. Who are these people? Business tycoons? Pro athletes? Nope. They are your neighbors, regular folks at all levels of income who made a commitment at some point to get the fundamentals right.

2. 401Ks Rule. Sign up for your company 401K plan – right now. Maximum contributions are $16,500 and $22,000, depending on your age. try to contribute at least what your company is matching with “free money.” many plans match 50% of the first 6% of your salary deferrals. If you put in 6% of your salary, your company will tack on another 3%, putting you at a very respectable 9% savings rate for the year.

As a rule of thumb, if you save 10% or more of your income for 30 years, you will have saved enough to pay yourself a “salary” in retirement comparable to what you earned on the job.

Remember, too, that 401K contributions are pre-tax, meaning every dollar you put in a 401K account reduces your taxable income by a dollar.

3. Set it and Forget it. Dollar Cost Averaging is a disciplined approach to investing that helps take the emotion (fear and hubris, mostly) out of your decisions, and allows you to smooth out the inevitable ups and downs of the market.

Here’s how it works: instead of plopping your entire nest egg into a mutual fund or basket of stocks all at once, you trickle your money into those investments in a series of same-sized regularly timed (monthly or quarterly) share purchases. you make your scheduled investment whether the market is up or down.

If you had invested $100 in the S&P 500 Jan 1, 2008, today it would be worth $92, a loss of about 8%. however, if you added $25 over each of the four quarters of 2008, for a total of $100, today that investment would be worth $103, a return of 3%. why the difference? Because dollar cost averaging forced you to buy shares at lower prices as the market went down in 2008. as a result, you had more shares in your portfolio when the market rebounded in 2009 and 2010.

4. Join the Bucket Brigade. Asset Allocation is a fancy Wall Street term for spreading your money across several different types of investment baskets, or buckets. It’s a reliable strategy for protecting yourself against the uncertainties of markets and economies. Simply put, you should be invested in areas of the market place that don’t necessarily move in tandem and thus may offset each other’s short-term losses.

Your financial adviser should be someone who makes you feel at ease – enough so that you are comfortable sharing intimate financial details of your life. A successful advisory relationship can last for many years, so look for a person you can trust and with whom you enjoy spending time.

Some advisers earn designations as part of their ongoing training. for example, a Certified Financial Planner certification indicates completion of training in the financial planning process, with an understanding of insurance, investments, tax strategies and retirement and estate planning.

consider specialization, as needed.

Look for an adviser who has special expertise to meet your specific needs, such as estate planning or succession planning for your business.

Check professional references.

Take the time to call each reference. ask specific questions to get an idea of the adviser’s strengths and weaknesses. If possible, talk to clients and professional associates. Credentials can also be verified by the organizations that award them.

Be a proactive client.

Ask for what you need. If you aren’t satisfied with the level of service you receive, take your business elsewhere.
