Today, I’m going to help walk you through the world of the Roth IRA and discuss whether it makes sense to convert to a Roth IRA.

What is an IRA?

IRA stands for Individual Retirement Account. IRAs represent an investment umbrella that offers certain tax advantages because this money is set aside for retirement. the government encourages retirement savings by offering tax breaks to those who save under a retirement umbrella like the IRA. Essentially, an IRA is a label or designation given to a portion of your investing dollars. An IRA is not an investment in itself, rather a designation for your investments.

As an example, you could own shares of Joe’s World Corn Crops in a non-IRA account, or you could own shares of Joe’s World Corn Crops in an IRA account. within an IRA you can own all common investment offerings like a savings account, mutual fund, CDs, bonds, annuities, etc. the only difference is the one investment adheres to government requirements (the IRA), and it offers tax advantages.

However, to fully capitalize on the tax advantages, you must accept the rules and restrictions determined by the US government.

Key differences between the Roth IRA and the Traditional IRA:

When someone invests in a Traditional IRA, their investment amount is tax deferred. this means that if you make $50,000 in a year and contribute $5,000 to a Traditional IRA, you would pay income tax only on $45,000 ($50,000 – $5,000). However, when you withdraw your money from the Traditional IRA, you will pay taxes on that money. for this reason, it is called a tax deferred investment. Taxes are deferred to a later date (at the time the money is taken out).

If your $5,000 investment is now worth $10,000, when you take the money out you will pay taxes on $10,000.
A Roth IRA is not tax deferred. instead, you pay your taxes up front when the money is put into the account. If you made $50,000 a year and contributed $5,000 to a Roth IRA, you would pay taxes on the full $50,000. So what’s the advantage? When you withdraw your money, you will not pay any more taxes. thus, if your $5,000 investment is now worth $10,000, you will take out that $10,000 tax free because the taxes have already been paid, and your money grows tax free.

Here’s a simple analogy. the Roth IRA is like a fast-food restaurant where you pay when you first get your food, but you don’t pay anything when you walk out. the Traditional IRA is like a sit down restaurant where you don’t pay anything when you come in and eat, but you’ll pay on your way out the door.

Because your investments grow tax free, the Roth may be more advantageous for some investors.
Investors always have the opportunity to roll a Traditional IRA into a Roth IRA, and whoever did that in 2010 enjoyed some special advantages. why?

Typically there is an income cap on who is eligible to convert a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. If you earn more than $100,000, you were previously not allowed to convert to a Roth IRA. However, in 2010, anyone can convert their Traditional to a Roth regardless of income. this, of course, was good news for high wage earners.

When you convert a Traditional IRA to a Roth, you’ll pay taxes on that money. Remember, with the Roth IRA, you always pay taxes up front, not at the back end. as such, you can expect a higher tax bill the year you convert. If someone converted to a Roth in 2009, those taxes would have been due in 2010. However, if someone converted in 2010, the taxes due will be spread over a two year period (50% in 2011 and 50% in 2012).

Important Considerations Before Converting to a Roth IRA

The older you are, the less a conversion makes sense. When you do a conversion you cannot withdraw any earnings on that money for five years. you can still access the actual contributions immediately, but not the earnings. since you won’t have as much time for your income to grow tax free, your age might make a conversion less appealing.

Carefully consider your tax bracket. If your conversion will push you into a higher tax bracket you might instead consider converting a portion each year to avoid paying higher taxes. you can convert over several years instead of just in one year.

If you will have a child who will be applying for financial aid, you need to be aware of the fact that the Roth IRA conversion amount will be considered as income on your financial aid form.

Do you have the money to pay the taxes? If you cannot pay the taxes (from outside funds) then the conversion makes less sense. By converting and using other funds for the taxes you indirectly get to invest more money.

What do you think will happen to tax rates in the future? Of course, no one knows, but if taxes go up in the future, you’ll be glad if you have a Roth. However, if they go down then the advantage might tilt towards the Traditional IRA.

Before converting, you’ll want to be sure you properly understand the implications of your decision. while it can be reversed, it is more efficient if you make the right decision the first time. Kiplinger has a quiz to help you test your knowledge regarding Roth conversion rules.

After properly evaluating all the information, you should be able to make an informed decision to know if converting to a Roth IRA is a right choice for you.

Usually there are four main types of stock trading accounts. they are individual accounts, joint accounts, IRAs —Individual Retirement accounts, and Education Savings accounts. you have to select one of these accounts according to your personal needs and circumstances. you must be ready to deposit a minimum of $ 2,500 irrespective of the account you open. you can fund your account via free electronic transfer directly from your current bank account. you can also pay by check or wire transfer.

The individual investment account can be opened in the name of one person. Joint account can be opened for two people. It is also mandatory that both the persons should have reached the age of majority in their state of residence.

The third type of stock trading account is IRA or individual retirement account. It is a personal retirement savings account. It offers tax advantages to investors. you can deposit a part of your earnings into a tax-deferred brokerage account. your contributions are also tax-deductible.

Individual retirement account-IRA– is of three types.

The first type is traditional IRA. In this account, you can defer the payment of taxes on your earnings until you start taking the money out. The money that you put in is tax deductible in the year you put it in. The investors who are up to the age of 50, or under by the end of the year, can currently contribute up to $ 5000 every year, but those who are up to the age of 70 can contribute $ 4,000.

The benefit of investing under the traditional IRA is that you do not have to pay any taxes on what you earn till the time you start withdrawing the money. This process is known as tax deferment. This account makes sense because by the time you retire, you may be in a lower tax bracket. In that case, you will have to pay less in taxes on earnings from your IRA account. Roth Ira Options Trading

The second type of retirement category account is Roth IRA. This account is similar to the traditional IRA except that you pay taxes on the money you put in while you can withdraw money without paying any tax. Those who are up to the age of 50 can currently contribute up to $5,000 every year and those who are up to the age of 70 can contribute up to $4,000. you should opt for a Roth IRA if you think you will be in a higher tax bracket when you retire. if you invest under a Roth IRA, your investments can grow tax-free. you can withdraw money after a period of 5 years from the date of opening your account without paying any tax with the proviso that you have turned 59. The withdrawal can also be tax-free if it is used for a first time home purchase up to a limit of $10,000. you will, however, have to pay 10% penalty if you withdraw early.

The third type of account in retirement category is Rollover IRA. a Rollover IRA is a holding account. if you transfer funds or stock from a retirement plan such as a 401(k) or 403(b), the money or stock can be allowed to stay in the Rollover account for a period of 60 days. thereafter you will have to place the funds into another retirement plan. you can control your account during these 60 days. It must be noted that you cannot avail of this facility more than once a year

The fourth type of account is Education Savings Account or ESA. This account can be opened as a trust to pay educational expenses of the designated minor beneficiary and no contributions can be made after the beneficiary has reached the age of 18.
1. Take some losses. even though the stock market is up this year, you still might find that some of your portfolio holdings are at a loss. you can sell those assets and deduct up to $3,000 per year against ordinary income. The remainder carries forward for future use indefinitely. The assets must be held in a non-qualified or “taxable” account, as opposed to IRAs or other tax deferred or tax advantaged plans to deduct these losses.

2. Fund an IRA or Roth IRA (depending on which best fits your situation). Don’t wait, start the tax savings now. If you have funds in a savings account, more than likely you are earning a pitiful interest rate that is also taxable. you can put up to $5,000 ($6,000 if age 50 or older) into a Traditional or Roth IRA, which each have their own separate tax advantages until April 15. Certain income limits do apply.

3. Take a distribution from your retirement plan or convert your retirement plan to a Roth IRA. If your income is lower in 2010 than it will be in 2011, you could take a withdrawal and pay tax at a lower rate this year. you could also convert all or a part of a Traditional IRA or other qualified retirement plan to a Roth IRA now and never have to pay tax on those funds again! Restrictions, penalties and taxes may apply. unless certain criteria is met, Roth IRA owners must be 59 ½ or older and have held the IRA for 5 years before tax-free withdrawals are permitted. Remember that for the funds you convert to a Roth IRA in 2010, you have the option of electing to spread the taxable income into 2011 and 2012.

4. Get educated! No matter what your age is, now is a good time to look at continuing your education. The American Opportunity Credit provides a tax credit as much $2,500 on the first $4,000 of qualifying tuition and other education expenses. Pay your spring semester tuition or purchase your books before December 31 and you could receive the benefit of extra tax credits (not a deduction!) for this year. This credit is scheduled to change to be less favorable in 2011, so try and maximize the benefits under this year’s rules if possible.

5. Fix-up your house. making energy efficient improvements (windows, doors, furnaces and much more) and receive a 30 percent tax credit on the first $5,000 of qualifying property purchases (a $1,500 credit). These improvements must be installed by December 31 in order to count for the credit in 2010. Remember that if you already used up all of your credit in 2009, you are ineligible for tax benefits in 2010. If you only used part of the credit, you can still make improvements and take advantage of the unused portion yet this year.

These are simply brief overviews of some of the tax items that you should not only be thinking about, but also trying to take advantage of. there are many favorable tax provisions that will only be in place for a short while. make sure to call your financial advisor.

Opening IRA Account is Easy:

There are companies in the financial business that offers facilitating the rollover between IRAs. these companies are actually good in persuading people, aside from showing you the advantages they will do almost everything on your behalf all you have to do is sign documents and wait.

This is a very attractive offer, most of these financial firms have similar services and they have dedicated departments to entertain these kinds of predicaments. This is because they have become desperate of looking for people who would like to invest using their services; probably because of steep competition.

The kinds of situation these companies are caught up with are actually to your advantage. there are a lot of choices that you can make given the many companies that are out there looking for people who would invest. People who would like to convert their IRA to that of Roth IRA.

One of the things that they do to make you yearn for more information is the establishment of the online calculators, computing the variables that would determine your status if it would make great converting your IRA to that of Roth.

However they would warn you not to rely heavily on the virtual calculator that they have, but rather tell you that to make better judgment and decision give them a call. Selecting the right form of investment in gold depends on your overall financial strategy. Individual retirement arrangements, more commonly known as individual retirement accounts (IRAs), are familiar investment vehicles.
Selecting the right form of investment in gold depends on your overall financial strategy. Individual retirement arrangements, more commonly known as individual retirement accounts (IRAs), are familiar investment vehicles. Not having to pay taxes on assets held within an IRA can significantly increase growth. Investing in gold through an IRA offers a hedge against inflation.

For the investor beginning to invest in precious metals, an obvious question is “Can I buy gold for retirement for an IRA?” and the answer is simple: yes. You can not only create a new IRA, you can also transfer contributions from another IRA or rollover a 401(k) to your new IRA.

New IRAs can only be funded with cash or cash equivalents, for example money market funds or treasury bills. The IRA then acquires the investment. Transfers and rollovers between existing IRAs and other retirement accounts can be of any asset class.

Generally, you can only rollover funds from your 401(k) after you’ve left the employer funding your 401(k). to be sure of the requirements, just contact your fund manager.

Kinds of IRAs for Precious Metal Investing

For the purposes of protecting individual wealth, the most relevant IRAs are the Traditional, the Roth and perhaps the SEP. All have rules for eligibility which include age, other pension plans and AGI (adjusted gross earnings on income tax).

Most people are familiar with the Traditional IRA established in 1974, and the Roth IRA, established in 1997. for these IRAs, as for all types, earnings on the investment are not taxed. Traditional IRA contributions may be tax deductible in the year of contribution; taxes are paid at the time of distribution. Roth IRAs are funded with after-tax contributions; no taxes are paid at the time of distribution.

The SEP IRA allows a small business or self-employed individual to set up a Traditional IRA instead of a pension fund. Ease of administration is one of the advantages.

The administration of all IRAs are handled by a custodian, whether bank, credit union, brokerage firm or any other financial services provider. Keep in mind a financial firm may service only certain kinds of investments.

Self-Directed IRAs

Self-Directed IRAs (SDIRAs) are designed for more complicated investments requiring increased attention and expertise on the part of the investor. Not every financial service provider handles these. Custodial responsibilities include keeping your IRA on the right side of IRS law. for this expertise and added attention, you will pay more.

IRAs for Physical Gold

Gold investments come in a large range of choices. each choice has a specific advantage and disadvantage. All paper investments, i.e., paper representation of gold, such as mutual fund shares, ETFs, mining stocks, annuities, or futures can be used.

What is surprising is that even physical bullion can be used in an IRA. Not unexpectedly only a few companies actually provide this service. only recently has the gold price climbed to historic highs generating a new wave of broad interest.

The IRS has rules regulating the form and purity of gold and other precious metals to be placed in an IRA. In addition, each financial service itself may have different requirements on the type of gold and the cash equivalent amount. Setting up a gold bullion IRA involves more work than a typical paper transaction. Typically, fees charged will be higher.

Putting gold bullion in an IRA may be a good choice for an investor aiming to protect his hard earned assets against both the ravages of inflation as well as taxes. for more information on the types of investments available, see http://buygoldforretirement.info

That state of affairs that we call “retirement” in this country is now entering what I call Phase III. in Phase I, retirement for most people meant simply that they no longer were able to work due to age or illness. The fortunate ones who accumulated enough money to support themselves comfortably when they grew too old to work were in the minority. back then, in our largely agrarian economy, the best that many Americans could look forward to was living out old age in the homes of their children.

Phase II was ushered in with the introduction of defined benefit retirement plans, followed by Social Security. in the years of that Golden Age of Retirement, the majority of Americans could look forward to financially comfortable years after age 65, free of dependency on the kids and no need to continue working.

Now, we’re entering Phase III, and the rules are changing again.

Outliving nest eggs
Social Security is still with us, but defined-benefit corporate retirement plans have given way to IRAs and 401(k)s. once again, responsibility for a financially comfortable retirement is back in our own hands.

For millions of Americans approaching conventional retirement age, the economic meltdown of 2008 has sent a wake-up call. with shrunken IRAs and 401(k)s, inflated values of housing falling back into reality and a growing uncertainty about our economic future, many workers — especially those in their 50s and 60s — are taking another look at their plans for retirement. And for good reason: according to a study published in April 2009 by the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) in Washington, less than one-quarter of workers age 55 and older have accumulated savings and investments totaling $250,000 or more. about 60 percent have less than $100,000.

With today’s longer life spans resulting in retirements spanning 20, 30 or even more years, nest eggs of that size are likely to die long before the retiree. That’s the reality dawning on the oldest members of the baby boomer generation.

Insurance statistician Charles Henderson, age 58, had long planned to take “early” retirement at age 62. “I don’t see that happening now,” he says. “Even with luck, I may have to work another 10 years.”

More delay retirement
And he’s not alone. Delaying retirement is an obvious choice for those who are worried about outliving their nest eggs. A recent survey by mutual fund giant Vanguard found that 45 percent of American investors see delaying retirement as one way to cope with the effects of today’s economic uncertainty.

According to the EBRI report, workers who say they are very confident about having enough money for a comfortable retirement this year hit the lowest level in 2009 (13 percent) since the Retirement Confidence Survey started asking the question in 1993, continuing a two-year decline.

Delayed retirements offer a triple benefit: Every year that a worker continues in the job beyond normal retirement age allows more time to rebuild retirement accounts, increases the eventual Social Security benefit, and reduces the number of years of dependency on retirement savings.

Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Kelley Greene reported, “The average retirement age in the U.S. is 63 — but most investors don’t recognize the benefits from working even just two or three additional years, financial advisers say. according to research by T. Rowe Price, the Baltimore-based mutual-funds company, a 62-year-old with a $100,000 salary and a $500,000 nest egg will see his annual retirement income from investments and Social Security rise by 6 percent for every additional year he remains in the work force.”

Modifying plans
For some, a “modified” retirement is proving to be the answer. Working, either full-time or part-time, after retirement is the expectation of 77 percent of today’s workers, according to a study by the Pew Research Center.

But not everyone who plans to work after retirement will do so because of need. by a two-to-one margin, those who expect to work after retirement say they will do so mostly because they’ll want to rather than because they’ll have to, the report says. Those with more education and more income are the most likely to say they’ll work after retirement because they want to. also, younger workers (ages 18 to 29) and the self-employed are more likely than others to say they’ll work after retirement out of desire rather than necessity.

Whatever the reason, working after retirement from a career job is a clearly accelerating trend. Longer life spans, today’s economic uncertainties and the relentless pressures of inflation are combining to complicate one of life’s toughest new challenges: how to make your money last longer than you do.

Achievable goals
Whether your planned retirement is years away or just over the horizon, one thing is clear: The more you put aside for savings each month, the more you will benefit on the road ahead. And the more realistic you are in your retirement objectives and planning, the more likely you are to meet your goals.

“If you hope to enjoy a comfortable retirement, you’ll have to arrange for it yourself,” says Certified Financial Planner Carl J. Kunhardt. “No one else is going to worry about your financial health in retirement. If you don’t take care of it yourself, it won’t happen.”

If you’d like to participate in my informal survey of how the current economy is affecting the retirement plans and objectives of individuals, you can e-mail me at lynott@verizon.net for details.
